Post rescue-relief, Sevabharathi teams of counselors fan out, delivering solace to the flood hit thousands

Far from the maddening crowd, a batch of Chennai ladies, armed  with counseling experience, visited a saddening crowd in Guruswamy Nagar near Basin Bridge and Satyavanimuthu Nagar in Chennai.  Yes, it was saddening to anyone uninitiated.  The residents of these two localities had lost everything you call breadwinning tools - the iron box, the cobbler’s anvil etc—they are the service providers at the lowest level in society like cobblers who sit by the roadside, the iron man with his pushcart calling out for your dress to be pressed.  The worst hit by the floods are the women-folk of the area, whom the counseling team interacted with, day long, today. The women folk were overwhelmed that someone who is a teacher, someone who is an official in a private concern, etc., came seeking their doorstep just to ask ‘how are you?’  But the visiting team did not stop with that one question.  They simply began the interaction by involving the womenfolk in engaging games, say for half an hour.  By that time, the hard hit residents had emerged half way from the melancholy mood they were in for the past fortnight.  It was then that the visiting counselors made them sit in a circle and pour out their hearts.  This had a salutary effect on the tensed minds of the womenfolk. Of course, the visitors made it a point to note down whatever the women folk listed as their requirements to start life afresh.  While saying goodbye, the visiting ladies left a bunch of promises that the wish list would be fulfilled and also a lightened heart in every women of the devastated tenements.  (The visiting ladies who counseled the flood hit women folk in the couple of localities on Wednesday were from Sevabharati, that has become a household name by its systematic rescue-relief-rehab activities in Chennai and other districts of Tamilnadu)

Kalyaana Maistry Garden is a part of Purasaiwallkam.  It faced flood fury, leaving the tenements of the poor residents in a shambles – hygienically. Most of the residents are daily wage earners.  Women in their families were particularly worried about the health of children, because sewage water had entered their homes along with the flood water.  Of course, the dislocation caused by floods deprived them of the previous jobs of their menfolk.  In that condition of mind, teams of Sevabharathi counselors, all ladies, went door to door giving them useful hints on hygiene, thus comforting their worry about health.  Regarding the anxiety over job the ladies, many of whom were entrepreneurs, informed the people there of scope for training in skills, thus alleviating their minds over future family income.  The counselors divided themselves into 5 member teams and covered over 1000 homes in that area.

சந்தடி மிகுந்த சென்னை பரபரப்புகளுக்கு அப்பால் சென்னை பெண்மணிகளின் இரு குழுக்கள், ஆறுதல் கூறும் கலையில் தங்களுக்கு உள்ள அனுபவத்தையே பலமாகக் கொண்டு வெள்ளத்தின் சீற்றத்தால் எழுந்த சந்தடி ஓய்ந்து சோகம் கப்பியிருந்த பேசின் பிரிட்ஜ் அருகில் உள்ள குருசாமி நகர், சத்தியவாணிமுத்து நகர் ஆகிய இரண்டு படுமோசமாக வெள்ளம் பாதித்த பகுதிகளை நாடிச் சென்றார்கள். தெருவோரம் அமர்ந்து செருப்பு பழுதுபார்க்கும் தொழிலாளர்கள், தள்ளுவண்டியில் இஸ்திரிப் பெட்டி வைத்து இஸ்திரி போடும் தொழிலாளர்கள் ஆகியோரின் குடும்பங்கள் பெருவாரியாக குடியிருக்கும் பகுதிகள் அவை. வீட்டு வாசற்படி ஏறி ‘நல்லா இருக்கீங்களா?’ என்று ஆசிரியைகளாகவும் தனியார் நிறுவனங்களில் அதிகாரிகளாகவும் பணிபுரியும் தாய்மார்கள் கேட்டதே அப்பகுதி பெண்மணிகளுக்கு பெரிய ஆறுதலாகிவிட்டது. ஆனால் போனவர்கள் அந்த ஒரு கேள்வியுடன் நிற்கவில்லை;  நாள் முழுதும் அந்தப் பகுதி பெண்மணிகளுடன் பாட்டு, கதை, விளையாட்டு என்று கலகலப்பு சேர்த்தார்கள்; அவர்களின் மன இறுக்கத்தில் பாதி குறைந்தது. அடுத்தபடியாக ஆற அமர அனைவரும் வட்டமாக அமரச் செய்தார்கள்; அவ்வளவுதான். பரிபூரண உரிமையுடன் அப்பகுதிப் பெண்மணிகள் தங்கள் மனம் திறந்து கொட்டித் தீர்த்துவிட்டார்கள். போன தாய்மார்கள்  அதையெல்லாம் கவனமாகக் குறித்துக் கொண்டார்கள். வரட்டுமா என்று விடைபெறும் போது, போன தாய்மார்கள் அர்த்தமுள்ள வாக்குறுதிகளை மட்டுமல்லாமல் அப்பகுதி பெண்மணிகளின் லேசாகியிருந்த உள்ளங்களையும் அங்கே  விட்டுவிட்டுப் புறப்பட்டார்கள்.  (சென்னையையும் பல மாவட்டங்களையும் பெரு வெள்ளம் தாக்கியதும் மீட்பு--நிவாரணம்-மறுவாழ்வுப் பணிகள் செய்து மக்கள் மனங்களில் இடம் பிடித்திருந்த சேவா பாரதி அமைப்பின் சார்பில் ஆறுதல் சொல்லச் சென்றவர்கள்தான் இந்தத் தாய்மார்கள்).

 புரசைவாக்கம் கல்யாண மேஸ்திரி தோட்டம் பகுதியில் வசிக்கும் பெரும்பாலான குடும்பங்கள் கூலி வேலைகள் செய்து பிழைப்போர்  குடும்பங்கள். இவர்களின் வீடுகளுக்குள் புகுந்தது கழிவு நீர் கலந்த வெள்ள-மழை நீர். வீடு பயங்கர சேதத்தில். உடலில் வெள்ளநீரின்  கடும் பாதிப்பு. அதையெல்லாம் மீறி வந்துவிட்டார்கள். மனது மட்டும் இன்னும் ஆறவில்லை. அடுத்து பிழைப்புக்கு என்ன வழி? என்ன நோய்கள் எல்லாம் பரவுமோ? என்று அடுக்கடுக்காக மனதில் கேள்விகள்.  பதிலுக்கு எங்கே போவது என்று திகைத்து நின்று கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். டிசம்பர் 17 அன்று வந்தார்கள் சேவாபாரதி தாய்மார்கள் 25 பேர்.  அவர்களில் சிலர் தொழில் முனைவோர்.  பலர் இல்லத்தரசிகள். ஐந்தைந்து  பேராக அந்த பகுதியின் எல்லா தெருக்களிலும் குடும்பம் குடும்பமாக மக்களை சந்தித்தார்கள்.  நோய்த்தொற்று பரவாமல் இருக்க வழி சொல்லிக் கொடுத்தார்கள்.  தொழிற்பயிற்சி ஏற்பாடு குறித்து தகவல் கொடுத்தார்கள்.  வறுமையில் உள்ள தங்களை, அதுவும் வெள்ள பாதிப்பால் பரிதாபமாக நிற்கிற தங்களை வீடு தேடி வந்து கண்ணீரை துடைக்க சமுதாயம் இருக்கிறது என்ற எண்ணத்தை அங்குள்ள மக்கள் மனதில் பதியச் செய்துவிட்டு விடைப்பெற்றார்கள்.
