Damb squib? – the show of Mangalsutra removal

A Division Bench of the Madras High Court today granted an interim stay on a single judge D Hari Paranthamam’s order, quashing the police ban of a ‘thaali removal and beef-eating’ event organized by Dravidar Kazhagam.
Dravidar Kazhagam has called for an event ‘thaali removal and beef-eating’ today commemorating Dr. Ambedkar’s 125th celebrations, by DK President K Veeramani as a retaliation to the attack on a television channel that proposed to telecast a debate ‘Mangalsutra – a boon or bane’ in modern society. The event was organized at ‘Periyar Thidal’ on the premises of the party office.

Various Hindu organizations, women organizations and public had filed a petition with the Commissioner of police seeking for the ban of the event which hurts the sentiments of Hindus on the auspicious day of ‘Tamil New Year’.

Sensing the law and order problem, the City police has issued a prohibitory order under section 144 in and around ‘Periyar Thidal’ between April 9 and April 24 banning all forms of public protests.

Based on the petitions filed by various groups, the Madras High Court heard the case, granted permission to hold the event and thus quashed the prohibitory order on April 12. "I am only concerned about freedom of expression and Article 19 of the Constitution and hence hearing the case at this hour. If someone had approached the court seeking permission to hold an event in praise of Nathuram Godse or to abuse Gandhi, I will permit," Justice D Hari Paranthaman said. He directed police to give adequate protection to safeguard the rights of DK for freedom of expression guaranteed under Art 19 (1) (a) and (b) of the Constitution.

Based on the order, the City Police and Hindu Munnani went for an appeal in the Madras High Court. A special sitting by a Division bench comprising Justices Satish K. Agnihotri and M. Venugopal nullified the order passed by Justice D. Hariparanthaman.

Hindu Munnani had earlier called for a protest demo at ‘Periyar Thidal’ in Chennai and protest demo at various parts of Tamilnadu on April 14. Dravidar Kazhagam advanced the stage managed event without public support by three hours against the scheduled time of 10 a.m. Among the gathering, 21 couples with the women removed the thaalis having DMK symbol on it, citing that thaali is a symbol of woman’s enslavery.

At 10.00 a.m. Hindu Munnani volunteers gathered before Periyar Thidal. DK volunteers left out the Periyar Thidal by 9.30 a.m. as soon as the interim stay was issued.
Hindu Munnani volunteers later gathered at the headquarters of Hindu Munnani office, wherein Shri H Raja, BJP leader addressed the volunteers and condemned the event. Shri Ramagopalan, founder Hindu Munnani strongly condemned the ugly act of Dravidar Kazhagam. Shri Ramagopalan citing the dharma in Hindu religion said, “There are three reasons that can be considered for a woman living with husband to remove Mangalsutra. 1. Divorce. 2. When husband does not suits wife. and 3. When wife does not suits husband. It is left for K Veeramani to answer under what category the show belongs to.” Shri Veerabahu, Shri Ramamurthy, Shri Bakthavatsalan, Organizer Hindu Munnani also spoke on the occasion.

Hindu Munnani volunteers burnt the effigy of K Veeramani, pictures of Periyar at various places of Tamilnadu. At some places, Hindu Munnani volunteers distributed the Mangalsutra to the public.
