It was an unprecedented expression of concern by Saints of Tamilnadu. Almost all Hindu saints including many Saiva Mutt Heads, (Aadheenams) have come out in condemning the fringe group Karuppar Kootam which posted videos in Youtube channel denigrating the spiritual text in Tamil 'Kanda Sashti Kavacham', a hymn to Lord Karthikeya (called Muruga in Tamil Nadu). The text is a prayer to Lord Muruga, also called as Kanda (Skanda) to shield the human frame from all deceases and ailments. It narrates how the devotee visualizes Lord Muruga's weapon, the “ VEL” (spear) giving a “healing touch “ to each and every part the body to recover from ailment, acting as “ kavachaam” ( Shield). The video denigrates the text dabbing it in sexual colour. It was widely condemned by Hindus forcing police to arrest the culprits. Over 500 such videos were deleted and the account was closed.
A few of the Saints who condemned the sacrilage in unequivocal terms:
“ In recent times, it is seen, concerted attempts are made to denigrate/defame Hindu Gods, Customs/Ritulas , that disturbs the communal harmony in the society. All the devotees of Lord Muruga should unite to condemn and stop repetition of such things in future. All Bhaktas of Lord Muruga should come out in great numbers on the ensuing holy Sashti day (August 9, 2020), maintaining social distance, and chant/recite “ Kanda Sashti Kacvasam”. - Swamiji Santhalinga Maruthachala Adikalaar, Perur Mutt.
