Soon after the announcement of lock-down by the Central Government to contain the spread of COVID-19, keeping in mind that many people belonging to the lower strata of society will be affected, Swayamsevaks through Bharathi Seva Sangam swung into action and appealed to the general public to donate liberally for the relief work. It was decided to carry out three major relief works viz.,
• Distribute masks, gloves, sanitizer etc., in thousands to the sanitary workers, police personnel, hospitals etc.
• Run community kitchens and distribute food pockets to daily wage earners, beggars, migrant workers etc.
• Distribute kits containing essential items needed to run a family of four for 1 month to the deserving people, after suitable verification.
Launched an app Seva for elders, where the senior citizen of Chennai can dial in 044-35893020 and make their emergency requests. Volunteers are attending these requests across 125 pincodes of greater Chennai.
So far, the total quantity of the above distributed are as follows:
• Masks – 30000+
• Gloves – 22000+
• Food – 11000+
• Kits – 1500+
The beneficiaries include:
• Daily wage earners
• Beggars/People on streets
• Contract labourers
• Nomadic people
• Conservative workers
• Police personnel
• Hospital staff
• Migrant labourers
• People of other states
Swayamsevaks are in the process of distributing more masks, gloves and sanitizer partnering with feedmychennai.org and Chennai Corporation in distributing 10000+ food packets, procuring and distributing 6000+ provision kits across Chennai city.
