Proclamation by Mayor of City of San Mateo encouraging Yoga for Health

Proclamation encouraging all citizens of City of San Mateo to participate in Yoga from January 14-29, 2017.

Whereas, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) is a voluntary, non-profit, social and cultural organization that aims to preserve and promote Hindu culture and values such as universal brotherhood and selfless service; and contribute to the overall physical, intellectual and spiritual development of local communities; and

Whereas, January 14th is celebrated as Makar Sankranti – a day that marks the change of season as the sun enters the sign of Capricorn, or Makar which ushers in longer days symbolizing sunshine in life; and

Whereas, to mark this occasion, HSS has organized the twelfth annual, ‘Yoga for Health, Health for Humanity’ or ‘Surya Namaskar Yajna’ Yogathan from January 14th to 29th 2017 with the intent to create awareness about Yoga and its advantages in achieving a healthy body, mind and spirit; and

Whereas, HSS initiated this project in 2006 and participants from over 40 states have taken part in this event regardless of individual faiths and beliefs.

Now, Therefore Be It Resolved, that I, David Lim, Mayor of the City of San Mateo, and on behalf of the city Council, do hereby proclaim January 14-29 2017 as

YOGA FOR HEALTH, YOGA FOR HUMANITY – SURYA NAMASKAR 2017

And encourage all citizens of the City of San Mateo to participate in Yoga and the Yogathon and gain the benefits of an overall healthy lifestyle.
