A unique local support to a BMS-supported strike
Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), Neyveli has thanked the unique local support to the striking unions led by the BMS against disinvestment attempt of five percent shares by the Central Government. Local traders association has expressed its solidarity with the NLC workers by downing shutters for a day. It may be noted here that on July 5 BMS National Leaders met Coal Minister in Delhi regarding NLC Strike which began on July 3. During the first week of the strike the State did not experience any hardship in its power supply. Various 17 union representing around 30000 workers were constrained to go on strike in spite of High Court ban obtained the NLC administration.
It was a programme training the society in Seva
At the prayer hall in Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari 6000 kilos of rice painstakingly collected by over 150 volunteers from 500 villages was kept heaped. On top of the heap Devi Annapoorna idol was placed. Hundreds of people recited Annapoorna stotram by Adi Sankara Chapter 11 of Srimad Bhagavad Gita was recited. Anna Dhanam was performed. The rice was distributed among needy institutions such as old age homes; day care child centres (balwadis) etc. in the district. The programme was held on July 4, the Maha Samadhi day of Swami Vivekananda which was observed by Kendra ‘Volunteer Day’. This is not a one time charity. The Kendra organizes seven such programmes along the year so that the annual rice requirement of these institutions is met. In a way, this programme trains the society in seva, says a Kendra official.
When a Hindu protest caused a U-turn by an arrogant local body
On the outskirts of Tirunelveli, a district place was a temple devoted to Esakki Amman (Kali). Devotees reside in half dozen villages around. One fine morning, in the first week of July, the Municipal Corporation of Tirunelveli brought in earthmovers and razed down a part of the compound wall of the temple claiming, the temple was an obstruction in the sewage canal. Devotees gathered in hundreds and protested the move. A road roko resulted. Police and revenue officials rushed in. They assured that the temple will not be touched, when the devotees pointed out that a Church was left untouched in the part of the same canal. The municipal corporation caved in and the wall was rebuilt the same day.
