Thousands of Hindus gathered in Colombo to celebrate 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda

Colombo, February 21: Thousands of Hindus gathered in Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka to celebrate 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanand on Feb 10. This was the first time Hindus came with a united concept and proved their unity and strength.
Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh in Sri Lanka decided to celebrate Swami Vivekanandha’s 150th birth anniversary and formed committees among the villages, urban councils, municipal councils, District and Island levels.
The inauguration function was held on Feb 26th of 2012. Consequently 140 conferences held all over the Sri Lanka. More than 7000 committee members from various parts of the country helped to organize these programs very successfully. Nearly 500,000 of Hindus came into contact by these programs. 200,000 stickers were pasted on the doors of Hindu houses around the country and around 100,000 Hindus took part in these conferences.

The concluding program of Swami Vivekanand’s 150th birth anniversary year celebrations was held as National Hindu conference at Shalika grounds, Colombo on Feb 10th under the patronage leadership of Hon D.M.Swaminathan M.P. He is the trustee of famous Sri Ponnambalawaneshwarar temple in Colombo and also the grandson of Sri Kumaraswami was the president of reception committee in 1897 to welcome   Swamiji when he returned to Colombo from world religion of Parliament.
 A cultural procession with Swamiji’s photograph marched in the main streets of Colombo and ended at the Shalika grounds. An exhibition of various Hindu organizations was held in the ground with fifteen stalls.
Sharply at 3pm program started with hoisting the national flag by Hon Arumugan Thondaman minister of Livestock and Rural development. Swami Sarvaroopanandhaji president of Ramakrishna mission Colombo blessed the program. Brammachari Dharshan Chaithanya of Chinmaya mission and the buddist monk Amarapura Nikaya Gnanesgwara Thero were also present to grace the occasion.
Prof. Anirudhdha Deshpande All India general secretary of Swami Vivekananda 150th birth anniversary celebration committee, Shri S.Rajendran Dhakshin Kshetra Karyavah, Shri R.B.V.S.Manian VHP Tamil Nadu were the guest speakers in the program.
Hon ministers, deputy ministers, members of Parliament from all parties, provincial ministers, Director of Department of Hindu Religious and cultural affairs, leaders of all Hindu organizations were present in the stage.
About 10 thousands of Hindus attended the program in the disciplined manner. They were from all 25 Districts in Sri Lanka within 150 divisions (Taluks) consisting 640 villages.

  1. It is heartening to see these things. If at all someone could wake up the conscience of Rajapakse, it is RSS. I hope that RSS division of Srilanka does some plain talk and ensures safety of all living there.
