The convoy of Tamilnadu state unit of Congress chief Gnanadesikan was ‘waylaid’ by schoolchildren while it passed through Agaramel, a village on the outskirts of Chennai. It was Janury 12 and the children were just trying to impress upon the leader the significance of offering floral tribute (Pushpanjali) to the patriot saint Swami Vivekananda, at their school, the Vivekananda Vidyalaya Senneerkuppam, affiliated to Vidya Bharati. The appeal went home and the leader, with his partymen in tow, walked to the school and had the opportunity of joining the nation in performing Pushpanjali at the feet of Swamiji, the final programme in the year long Vivekananda’s 150 th Jayanti celebrations. Hundreds of Adi Parasakthi devotees in three buses which passed by too had this opportunity that day, thanks to the diligence of the schoolchildren! That day this particular Pushpanjali programme attracted over 28,000 persons drawn from 45 hamlets around Agaramel, according to Shri Ramanathan, school correspondent. Villagers from a hamlet wherein only Christian schools were there made a poignant request to the management of the Vivekananda Vidyalaya: ‘admit our children in yuor school, sir’! Every house of another hamlet had displayed Swami Vivekananda’s photo. The very sight of Swamiji was enough to discourage Christian propagandists from approaching the inmates of the house with their conversion plan. This was the report from Irulapalayam.
