Political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Ahmed Patel advocated the enactment of the law banning cow slaughter in the country. "Cow slaughter is inhuman and must be prevented," Patel, who attended the Urs (death anniversary) of Sufi saint Hazrat Shah Quamuddin Dada in Ekkalbara, said. Patel said holding religious fares can strengthen communal harmony in the country. "Indian civilisation and culture survived due to preaching of religious leaders of both Hindu and Muslim community," he said. The issue of enacting the law banning cow slaughter across the country was raised by the custodian of the shrine during the programme.
Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel has announced to donate Rs 10 lakh for the construction of a cow-shed near a centuries-old dargah in the district.
Face value being a hard core and politician in the closest circle (political secretary) of Sonia Gandhi his utterances can only be taken with a pinch of salt. But the Hindutva influence increasingly inundating the Congress citadel is a recent phenomenon following the emergence of the Hindu vote in Indian polity. Maybe, Congress needs Hindu votes badly as the Hindu vote has proved itself beyond doubt in Gujarat and Bihar.
